The thrill of driveways

I’ve just had a look on Rightmove, but it seems you can’t filter for ‘driveway’. Which will be a shame if I ever win a big EuroMillions rollover. Perhaps at the point a nine-figure sum hits your current account you let an actual person sift through the properties rather than an algorithm. If my numbers come up, I’ll let you know.

You see, for me, dreams of a driveway go hand in hand with that fantasy ten-car garage. My personal perfect set of corners to start or end any journey, no matter how mundane the majority of its miles. In fact I think I’d want three driveways: a central straight run to the house, then a twistier option heading off to the left and a gravel alternative to the right.

Of course I’ve been contemplating this because the Goodwood Festival of Speed is on right now and the Duke of Richmond’s is perhaps the most famous driveway in the motoring landscape. But his is not the only aristocratic access road that has been turned to motorsport.
