Overrated: Mazda MX-5

There will be dismay, disappointment, disbelief, maybe even a sense of rage at my selection of vehicle in this instance, and it will all be entirely justified. In a democratic world we are each entitled to our own opinions. Were this not the case, cruise ships would not exist.

Fortunately, the same rule applies to cars. Even the AMC Pacer had its fans, and while I’m not for one moment comparing the (almost) universally adored MX-5 with the lard of arse that was Wayne Campbell’s automobile of choice, what’s important here is the notion of context. Specifically when it comes to that word ‘overrated’.

Because while I get why the MX-5 has been so cherished by so many across the generations, I do genuinely think it to be overrated. One that has received more praise than perhaps it deserves. In the end it is not, I believe, quite as brilliant a sports car as it’s been made out to be, despite being very good indeed at satisfying its target audience.
