It was a question that gnawed constantly at my imagination, and now I’ve scratched the itch there is no going back. I’ve committed to the dark side, experienced intimately what lies within and my life with cars – or at least this car in particular – will never be the same again.

Why? Because I’ve crossed the line and joined the ranks of the aftermarket army and, right now, it feels wickedly correct – even though plenty of people reading this will for sure think I’ve lost the plot and ruined a perfectly nice Golf R in the process.

But bear with me, if you would, for although I’ve committed that most cardinal of sins, I hope you may be able to understand why I’ve done what I’ve done to this car, and how childishly happy I am with the results.
