You fine folk do not give us good money to read and hear us extemporise on subjects about which we not only think we know little, but probably actually know even less than we think. But as Ti has yet to recruit an AI editor-in-chief (would he, she or it have to be AI him, her or itself even to qualify?) you’re lumbered with me.

I really have almost no understanding of how AI came to be and only a little of how it can do what it does. In both these regards it’s rather like the Van de Graaff generator that made my hair stand on end on a visit to the Science Museum in the 1970s.

The root of that fascination lies in the one thing I do know absolutely about AI: it’s in its infancy, still chewing Farley’s Rusks and soiling itself. It is today where the internet was 30 years ago, and if that doesn’t make you sit up and take notice, perhaps this will.
