‘C’est bon?’ said the old dog stepping from his brand new box of tricks. Oui, Sébastien. C’est très bon. The helicopter shot showed a crowd of people surging forward and engulfing the purple Puma rally car like a wave breaking around a rock. Loeb and Galmiche victorious. The M-Sport Ford fairytale a reality.

In the run up to this year’s Rallye Monte Carlo, the return of Loeb was not the main story. The fans were excited, but most commentators seemed to think the nine-time World Champion would be off the pace and making up the numbers.
