It is perhaps my favourite drive in the UK, and where I am blessed beyond imagining is that it starts within a mile of my front door. Home to Anglesey, crossing Wales from southeast to northwest in one hit. In the right car, at the right time of year and day, it is so absurdly rewarding at times you fear you might be dreaming it.

If you’re interested, I take back roads to Crickhowell, the A479 to Talgarth and on up to Builth Wells, where you collect the A470 to Rhayader. The secret is then to get off the main road and take the B4518 all the way to Llanidloes where you hop back on the A470 to just outside Dolgellau and onto Betws-y-Coed. Then, if you haven’t already dropped dead through sheer hedonistic pleasure, the A5 through Snowdonia and up to the north coast will probably do the trick. Then, and for the first time in nearly 200 miles, you briefly have to get on a dual carriageway.
