Several things I shouldn’t have done… First, buying a car in lockdown, a gorgeous white 1967 Triumph GT6, the Giovanni Michelotti-designed fastback version of the Spitfire launched in 1966 with a six-cylinder engine and lovely lines, which apparently inspired the 1964 and 1965 Le Mans Spitfire coupé racers.
‘Born in Le Mans,’ was how Triumph introduced the little two-seater coupé at the 1966 Earls Court Motor Show.
‘I shouldn’t be buying cars in lockdown,’ I said to Mark Milne of Strata Creative Communications at a car launch in Coventry in January 2021. It was cold, Britain was locked in a seemingly endless cycle of Covid deaths and while from here it looks something of a picnic, at the time we were all frightened for the future.
