I want to talk about fun in cars, because there’s more than one type. The type I want to discuss in today’s lecture is what I call incidental driving fun. That’s the sort of enjoyment you can have at the wheel of a car when you’re really just going about your business.

Maybe you’re on the way home from dropping the kids off at school, or you’ve popped out to get milk. Whatever it is, if you’re in the right car and on the right road, you can find yourself having a dash of unexpected fun.

Typically you’ll have incidental fun in small city cars, because they’re the ones that are most likely to amuse you on those innocuous journeys on unpromising roads. This is a very different sort of driving fun to the kind you’re more likely to read about here – GT3s, deserted mountain roads, crack of dawn and all the rest of it.
