Strategy rules

Strategy in motor racing is and has always been a key part of being successful. The recent Spanish Grand Prix was a superb illustration of how a team and driver can win if they trust each other and work together on a strategy.

Race strategy is one of the most complex parts of Formula 1 because while you can make a plan for what is the fastest and best option for yourself, it also heavily depends on what your rivals do.  So you have to be able to think on your feet and make high quality decisions, sometimes in little more than a split second. This is why teams nowadays have a whole army of people watching their competitors’ lap times, listening to team radios for any clues about rival strategies and number crunching on a minute-by-minute basis so there are always options on the table
