The battle of Britain

The crash between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at the British Grand Prix has been the most talked about moment of the F1 season so far. It’s been a long time since the sport was splashed across the front and back pages of all the Fleet Street papers on the Monday morning after the Grand Prix. The drivers blamed each other, the teams backed their drivers and no one was overly surprised by that.

My view is that both could and should have done more to avoid the crash. It all started the day before in the Sprint where Lewis got a great slipstream down the old pit straight but Max covered the inside line so there was no way around for the Mercedes. Max knew that on Sunday there was no longer a tail wind into Copse and therefore the slipstream would be even more powerful. He also believed the Red Bull was running too much downforce and that to win the Grand Prix, he had to come out of Becketts sufficiently far ahead to break the tow on the opening lap.
