Porsche Cayenne Electric review

This is what the new electric Range Rover will face when it goes on sale later this year at a mooted price of £150,000, though there are credible rumours it will be more. And on the evidence of this drive at least, Porsche’s new Cayenne Electric is going to provide tough competition. To put it mildly.

As one Porsche test driver succinctly put it: ‘Cayenne Electric isn’t trying to be the best off-road car in the world, it isn’t trying to be the best sports car, but it’s aimed at extending the range of competence more than any other car.’

I’d say they’ve succeeded, even if at the top end in the Turbo – Porsche’s most powerful production car ever – a fair bit of that competence will likely remain redundant. Just look at the numbers: 1140bhp with launch control engaged, 1106lb ft of torque, optional four-wheel steering (£1389), air suspension (standard) with active individual damping (a £6799 option), delivering 183mph and 0-62mph in 2.5sec. It all seems impressive enough, but doesn’t begin to describe the sheer blunt-force trauma of this automobile’s get up and go.
