There is a concept I like to think of as ‘enough’. If you were lucky enough to be read bedtime stories and retain sufficient grasp of your critical faculties to remember them, you’ll know it’s a school of thought to which Goldilocks was a gold level subscriber.

What few realise, however, is that the sweet little girl with the eponymous golden barnet is the U-certificate version. In Robert Southey’s original tale, she was not an innocent young girl but a potty-mouthed, bad tempered old bat who not only scoffed the porridge and passed out on a bed, but also broke baby bear’s chair and legged it out of the window at the first sign of trouble never to be seen again. No prizes for guessing which one I preferred.

‘Enough’ is what gave us that uniquely dull genre of motor car known as the crossover SUV. Just about adequate, sufficient you might say, in all regards but really good only at robbing us of the will to live. But it also gave us this, the Mercedes-AMG GT55 that’s been parked outside for the last month and a bit.
