We’ve seen a fantastic wave of talent arrive into Formula 1 in the past few seasons and although Lewis Hamilton has emerged as the champion in every season bar one since 2014, there’s no question there are more challengers for his crown as F1’s top dog than ever before.

If Lewis wins the title this year, he will be the oldest person to do so in 28 years. Back then it was Alain Prost who cruised to the 1993 championship in the mighty Williams FW15C. The British ace has committed to another two seasons in F1 which will bring him to the same age of 38 as Prost was in that season. And it’s worth remembering Prost retired from the sport immediately thereafter.

The sheer consistency of peak performance, motivation and mental strength that Lewis has shown since he burst into F1 in 2007 is right up there with the likes of Roger Federer or Sachin Tendulkar in global sport. He had one shaky season in 2011 when there seemed to be a lot going on in his personal life away from the track, but even then he won races.
