Dear Colin, Recently I had my first flying lesson in a small aircraft, which was wonderful. And last weekend I had my first driving experience on track, which was also thrilling. Further pursuing both directions is not an option as it would be too expensive. Now I feel I need to choose between flying and racing. Any advice you can give me? Floris

Dear Floris,

I’m going to assume you’re in the first flush of youth. The ability to ignore risks and to conjure up the red mist required for motor racing have no place in flying. I’d have killed myself if I’d started flying in my twenties. My recommendation is that you go racing now, enjoy it for a few years, and then switch to flying later in life. That’s how I’ve done it and I think I got it in exactly the right order. However, racing is more expensive than flying, so you might want to take that into consideration.
