There were a few things that marked me out from my mates when I was 20 years old, the fact I’d rather drive than drink being one of them. Indeed I discovered the police were so hell bent on doing you for drink-driving that the moment they realised you were stone cold sober they clean forgot why they’d pulled you over and let you on your way.

In my case it was always speeding, so I drove at the pace I deemed sensible, which may or may not have always correlated precisely with the law’s view on the matter, and considered myself immune. And as I retained an unblemished licence throughout, you can’t say I was wrong.
