Like so many of my generation born into reasonably comfortable circumstances, I was sent away to school at the earliest possible opportunity, contracting out the upbringing of your offspring being very much the done thing back then.

As was going to the schools that ha educated one’s father. The primary and secondary establishments I attended were selected exclusively on the basis that they’d been good enough for him so would be again for me, a perhaps somewhat flawed prospectus given the intervening 35 years.
