Take three brand new Porsche 911s, all with manual gearboxes and only two powered wheels, then ask yourself – how different can they really be? After driving the Carrera S, Carrera GTS and GT3 back-to-back last week, they’re like chalk, cheese and Charlie Chaplin.

You don’t so much compare three 911 variants as wade through tired old clichés, dragging your legs and pulling at the gloop with cupped hands to get to the truth on the other side. You’ve read them all a thousand times: the GT3 is all the supercar you could ever need; the GTS is the true sweet spot of the 911 range; less is actually more, so all you really need is a basic Carrera.
