Sibling Rivalry: Round two

Three hundred and fifty thousand YouTube views later, and now that all three cars have been updated, it’s time to revisit our best performing group test to date. Two summers ago we gathered together three Porsches that to the lay person would seem pretty much identical – all 911s, all coupés, all rear-wheel drive, all manual, all two-seaters.

Only Porsche would sell three distinct models sharing so much in common (although, as we’ll see, it no longer does). They were the Carrera T, Carrera GTS and GT3 Touring. The latter was only available with two seats, the first two optionally so. On a sunny day in the Brecon Beacons, we drove all three back-to-back for mile after mile, eventually arriving at a winner. If you haven’t already, you can read that story here.

But as the 992-series 911 moves into the second phase of its life, the entire model range has been revised. The Carrera T, GTS and GT3 Touring are all quite different now, their changes ranging from minor to major, and from welcome to… not so welcome. And now we’ve had the chance to drive all updated models on UK roads, we can reveal whether our original verdict stands. Better still, we can also declare one the best 911 on sale and, in doing so, we will identify a fundamental shift in the composition of the 911 line up – a shift all prospective buyers will want to know about.
