Previously on Ti, we’ve talked about how ruinously expensive it is to develop a car. We’ve referred to unpleasant subjects such as sweat and synthetic legwear. But let’s say that, despite our best efforts, you are still determined to design your own car. How do you actually start?

Well first, we have to struggle with the English language, which can be a source of great confusion here. The verb ‘design’ can mean to decide the shape of the car, inside and out. In days gone by, the people who did this work were referred to as stylists. More recently, we refer to the good folk working in car makers’ design studios as designers, to recognise that they are exactly that – industrial designers with a deep understanding of engineering and industrial processes.
