When you see Dr Helmut Marko, the rather severe-looking boss of the Red Bull young driver programme these days, it’s easy to forget that he first found fame in another field of motor racing.

Because 50 years ago he shared with Gijs van Lennep the Porsche 917 that won Le Mans going so fast it would take until 2010 before any other car put a greater distance under its wheels during the course of the 24 hours. And they were far from favourites.
