We’re proud to have a number of expert writers regularly contributing stories to Ti, including engineers David Twohig and Joana Fidalgo, Formula 1 driver turned Sky F1 pundit Karun Chandhok, and superstar designers Ian Callum and Julian Thomson.

Between them David, Jo, Karun, Ian and Julian bring a level of hands-on experience and hard-won expertise to our digital pages that no automotive journalist could – and the avalanche of positive feedback tells us our subscribers love reading what they have to say.

So it has been a very easy decision to add one more contributor to our panel of expert writers, easier still to cast Dr Ulrich Eichhorn in that role. Uli is a true industry heavyweight – poached to Volkswagen from Ford by Ferdinand Piëch himself, he rose quickly through the group ranks to become the engineering chief at Bentley. Later on he assumed the position of Chief Technical Officer for the Volkswagen Group as a whole. It’s hard to imagine a more senior engineering role across the entire automotive industry than that.

Uli’s first car was a BMW 2002, which ‘spoiled me forever’, he says, and he’s proud to have worked under Piëch and renowned Ford ride and handling guru Richard Parry-Jones. We published his first story for The Intercooler this morning – in it, he recalls how a small team of engineers built a pair of prototype supercars to prove the durability of a new W12 engine, recording an average speed of 200mph over 5000 miles.

It’s an extraordinary tale, told with enthusiasm and humour, all from the perspective of somebody who loves cars the way we all do. Our hope is that Uli will add to the brilliant work being produced for us week in, week out by David, Jo, Karun, Ian and Julian, and that The Intercooler continues to be unique among car magazines, in print or online, for the insights they bring.
