It has, to put it mildly, been a while. Getting on for five years in fact. Not five years since the project was merely announced, but five years since the car was actually shown. That was the 2017 Frankfurt motor show and then the car was the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE. But now, finally, it is a project no more, and full details of the Mercedes-AMG ONE have been released.
It is what the company always promised it would be: the Aston Martin Valkyrie and GMA T.50 may have custom-built Cosworth V12s under their engine covers, but neither can claim to be a Formula 1 engine. The 1.6-litre, V6 ONE may have only half the cylinder count and a fraction of their capacities, but it is absolutely, genuinely and undeniably related to the engines Mercedes-AMG builds for itself and its customers’ F1 programmes.
