My first trip to Maranello

It had taken five years, which I didn’t think was too bad. Five years of hard slog, nearly losing my job on countless occasions, schlepping around Autocar’s various departments...

Jeep Avenger review

The first all-electric Jeep is no rugged off-roader, but it's good to drive and augurs well for a new era of Jeep EVs, writes Andrew English

It will scarcely come as a shock that McLaren is producing a drop-top version of the Artura – it has done as much for every unlimited production model so far. Nor will it be a great surprise that the new Artura Spider is lighter than any rival.

Its carbon fibre and composite roof can be raised or lowered in 11 seconds flat and at speeds up to 31mph. Of greater interest, though, is the raft of other upgrades that come with the car – which is available to order now for first deliveries this summer – that apply equally to both coupé and Spider versions of the Artura, for there is scarcely an area of its dynamic endeavour which is left untouched.

VW Golf GTI Clubsport review

There are a couple of problems with the VW Golf GTI Clubsport. The first is the Honda Civic Type R, which is altogether more rewarding to drive. The second is the VW Golf R...

A lament to the passing of the pipe

Exhaust noise has provided the soundtrack to our lives. But its days are numbered and its successors poor imitations. Andrew English has your graveside eulogy

For a start a re-flashed engine ECU raises the plug-in hybrid, twin-turbo V6 powertrain from 671bhp to 691bhp (or 700PS as McLaren likes to call it), while a new exhaust system should improve its voice too. There’s a new launch control mode designed to provoke gratuitous wheelspin, and new engine mounts to limit further the movement of the powertrain within the structure.

The shift times of the eight-speed gearbox are 25 per cent faster, new dampers have been fitted to the suspension improving their reaction times by 90 per cent, new ducts bring better brake cooling and they’ve even managed to add a couple more miles to its EV-only range, bringing it to 21 miles. To appease existing Artura owners, the next time they visit their dealer, it will emerge 20bhp stronger and for no extra cost.

Why such a comprehensive suite of revisions so early in the life of the car? Part of it is McLaren’s strategy of continuous improvement and with an all-new car like the Artura, there’s bound to be more scope than usual. But also had the car been launched when originally planned and not suffered multiple delays getting to market, such modifications would now seem far more timely.

The 2025 Artura Spider is priced at £221,500, a premium of almost exactly £20,000 over the coupé.
