The opening salvo of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship is little more than a fortnight away and, unlike its predecessor, it’s looking like a potential cracker.

It seems certain Mercedes won’t field a duff car again and Ferrari has had an entire winter and a new Team Principal to get its house in order. McLaren has a hot shot driver line up too. In short, Red Bull is in for a far tougher time this season than last.

So to warm things up, we’re going to be on Twitter every day from tomorrow (Thursday, February 16th) until practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix on Friday, March 3rd. That’s the day we’ll name the greatest F1 driver of all time. But it won’t be our choice, it will be yours. We’ve compiled a list of 24 drivers, generally regarded as the greatest and over the first eight days we invite you to vote for them via Twitter poll in batches of three.

Vote for the F1 GOAT

The victor in each round will progress to the quarter finals, and so on until we have our winner. Other than compiling the list, our only other involvement is to nominate eight seeds who’ll not meet until the quarters if you choose to vote them through. This is simply to ensure our otherwise random draw doesn’t pit, for example, Hamilton, Fangio and Senna against one another in round one, knocking out two before the competition’s even got going.

We won’t name seeds, though it should be pretty obvious. From tomorrow, each round starts at 7pm and lasts 24 hours, when we’ll name who’s going through as we launch the next round. And for those who say there’s no such thing as a GOAT, because you can’t compare different eras, we understand. But it’s just a bit of fun and hope you’ll still want to join in. So follow us on Twitter (@_theintercooler) and we’ll look forward to receiving your votes.
