A few years ago, PJ O’Rourke – widely regarded as America’s funniest writer – read a story I wrote about the 1960 MGA 1600 I had when I was 19 and emailed me this note:

I too, at just the same age, had a beloved 1960 MGA 1600, and all the same feelings it produced. I think about getting another one as a project for my old age. Then I remember the time my feet went through the wooden floor boards, the time the Lucas wiring harness caught fire, and trying to tune the SU carburettors. It would be like dating my high school girlfriend, now that she’s 67.
