It’s 1998 and I’m sitting in the darkness of my bedroom with a controller in my hands. I know it’s only a matter of time until my mother comes in to tell me to go play outside, but for now the flashing graphics on the TV have me mesmerised. I’m watching the intro scene of the very first generation of Gran Turismo.

The melody starts slowly with trees moving in the wind and it builds up to a scene of an empty race track, the sun rising and a pit crew unloading a car. The R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R LM comes into view just before the tempo picks up and nameplates start flashing quickly by, introducing one by one the cars that will be the heroes and villains of the game.
