Our Cars: Toyota iQ

Why has Steve Sutcliffe become so enthused about the Toyota iQ, one of the slowest cars he’s ever driven, that he’s actually gone out and bought one? Read on…

The Astons I created

Ian Callum is famed for designing the Aston Martin DB7, but that was just where his role in the brand’s rebuilding began, as he recalls here

In third gear the new Porsche 911 Turbo S is so fast that on a ruler straight, sun scorched British A-road, an undulation you’d not notice in almost any other car will earn you the instant, undivided attention of the traction control. It will take you from zero to a lengthy ban in less time than it took you to read the previous sentence. It is preposterously rapid in a straight line, quicker still relatively from point to point.

Death of the small car

In the 135-year history of the motor car, most memorable have been the small ones. Alec Issigonis’s Mini, Dante Giacosa’s Fiat 500, Stanley Edge’s Austin Seven, Ferdinand...

Where McLaren tripped up in Russia

The Russian Grand Prix was just the latest instalment in what is turning out to be one of the best seasons in F1 history and now only two points separate the leaders. If you missed the race...

That much you could have guessed. Also the fact it’s both wider and heavier than the last, for such has been the way for successive generations of Turbos. But no amount of boning up will prepare you for the kick of that new engine when it comes. One moment you’re here, the next you’re somewhere else. Words in my head right now as I sit typing while listening to it cool down? Absurd. Maniacal. Narcotic.

It’s better driver’s car too. Previous Turbos have always had a somewhat blunt edge – a factor of their mass and role as the ultimate long distance weapon – but this one is sharper, more engaging and accessible thanks primarily to reduced (but not eliminated) turbo lag and the fact the front end not only has far better bite, it is more clearly communicated through the much improved steering too.

Of course some will say what it gains in raw speed relative to, say, a Carrera S, is not matched by what it loses in extra weight and width. And purely as a thing to drive, I’d still agree. But in that very particular all-purpose role that’s been the preserve of the 911 Turbo since the introduction of the 993 version 25 years ago, this is not just the next step forward, but a massive leap.
